Thanksgiving is coming up in a few months! I’m so excited! Are you? Here are some of my favorite traditions and things I like to do for Thanksgiving. I’m a southern girl so of course that includes some really yummy food and a lot of family time.
Holidays are really special to me and dear to my heart because they bring all of my family together. Certain family members I only see once a year on Thanksgiving! This holiday is so beautiful because it focuses on family and what you are thankful for. We should be thankful everyday for the blessings that God has given us. Having this as a national holiday that is about spreading positivity and seeing how blessed we are is so special and something I look forward to every year.
Of course, let’s not forget about the food! I am thankful for all the wonderful cooks I have in my family. I want to go over some of my favorite Thanksgiving meals/ foods.
Food:
- Turkey (essential since Thanksgiving is also called Turkey Day!)
- Ham
- Cranberry Sauce
- Deviled Eggs (or as my husband’s side of the family likes to call it…Heavenly Eggs)
- Mashed Potatoes
- Bread Rolls
- Macaroni and Cheese
- Green Beans (My great-grandmother always made the best that I’d ever tasted!)
- Stuffing/ Dressing (There’s a big debate in the South on which one is better. They seem the same to me…. Don’t come after me Southerners.)
- Coconut Cake- This one is special to me because a few year ago, my family would always have Thanksgiving lunch at my great-grandparents house. My great-grandmother cooked all of the food and it was immaculate! Unfortunately, they don’t host Thanksgiving anymore, but I will always remember her famous coconut cake!
- Pumpkin Pie (yum)
Family:
A lot of the people that I see during this holiday, I don’t see very often It’s a very special time of fellowship and catching up with family.
- My family loves to play games outside (since I’m from the South, it is normally pretty hot on Thanksgiving Day).
- We pray and eat together.
- Family photos are a MUST!
- I hang out with my cousins that I don’t get to see often.
- Celebrate another year of being alive and being blessed to be surrounded by loving friends and family.
- When my great-grandparents lived in their house, we would have Thanksgiving there. When they moved into an apartment, we started to rent out the apartment clubhouse every Thanksgiving and gather there so that my great-grandparents didn’t have to travel.
Fun:
- One of my favorite memories of Thanksgiving is playing dominoes at my great-grandparents house. It was always a tradition that we did and we all had a great time.
- We adopted playing a game called Kubb (pronounced koob) before everyone was ready to eat our meal. If you’ve not heard of this game before, I’ll link it down below for you to look into it.
- As a kid, my cousins, brother, and I played hide and go seek. It was extra fun because none of us knew the area and we would normally do it at dark.
- Another silly thing we always did as kids was go on the treadmills (when we had Thanksgiving at my great-grandparent’s apartment’s clubhouse, they had a gym we could access) after we ate to “burn off calories”.
I love all these special memories that I can always keep. It’s a very special time to gather with family and to have a nice meal. I hope you enjoyed this!
