My Christmas Traditions

Yes I know, I know, it is August, but it’s not a secret to anyone who knows me that I love Christmas. I know what you’re thinking, “she’s one of the crazy people who listen to Christmas music all year round and keep their Christmas lights up too long.” My response to that is, you are 100% correct. In fact, I am currently listening to Christmas music.

Something about Christmas and all that goes along with it calms me down and puts me in a great mood. At any time (and any month) when I am feeling sad or disheveled, I put on Christmas music and it makes me feel so much better.

Christmas is always linked to fond memories of family, love, and traditions. I want to share some of my favorite Christmas traditions that I hope to continue for my daughter.

  1. I loved to decorate the house and get the Christmas tree out as soon as my mom would let me (of course we had to listen to Christmas music while doing it).
  2. We had an elf named Elfie (how original) and we loved him and still do. If you aren’t familiar with what they do Ill tell you. At some point in December, Elfie would come back from the North Pole and every night until Christmas would hide in different places around the house and either give us gifts, get into mischief or both. Elfie would go back up to the North Pole on Christmas Day.
  3. Making cookies for Santa on Christmas Eve was a MUST.
  4. It was a tradition that every Christmas Eve my brother would make a pallet in my room and sleep on the floor. We would read the Bible and look out the window to try to find Santa.
  5. Every Christmas Eve we would go out to eat (which we didn’t do often). Most the time it ended up being Waffle House because it was the only thing open in our small town.
  6. We would bring a present for our waiter/waitress because they had to work on Christmas Eve. I loved to be able to give a stranger a gift and hopefully make their night brighter.
  7. My family and I have always went to look at Christmas lights on Christmas Eve.
  8. After we got back from eating and looking at lights, we would go home and would always have a gift from Santa when we got there. It was always matching pajamas and sparkling cider (yum!).
  9. On Christmas morning, my brother and I would run down stairs to wake up our parents (your welcome Mom and Dad) and wait for them to get ready and get the video camera to record us opening the presents.
  10. My mom would make breakfast: sausage, eggs, biscuits, and orange juice which was a real treat.
  11. After opening and enjoying all of our presents, we would go to my grandparents house which was 2 1/2hours away and enjoyed Christmas presents and fellowship with them.

If you couldn’t already tell, Christmas is indeed my favorite holiday. Celebrating Jesus’ birth is such a special time. I’m so happy that this beautiful day is the most wonderful time of the year! When you think of Christmas what do you think of? Jesus, snow, lights, cookies, decorating, family, love, Christmas trees, warm houses, fireplaces, the smell of Christmas dinner, and all other wonderful things.

I’m happy to share my childhood Christmas family traditions with you. These are very special memories that I will always cherish and I hope to carry on this joy to my own family now.
